Clayton Lovejoy Dies

WILSON. — Memorial services were conducted today at Wilson Central School for Clayton D. Lovejoy, 33, secondary principal of the district, who died Tuesday evening (May 7, 1957) at his home after a lengthy illness.

Five Boy Scouts, students at the school, lowered the flag to half mast, while other students observed a moment of silence in the school auditorium. The memorial observance was conducted by Principal L. Ernest Tarr who read.

Students were scheduled to march to Exley Methodist Church this afternoon, where the body will lie in state until 8 p.m. when prayers will be offered by the Rev. Walter L. Kingsley, Exley pastor.

Mr. Lovejoy was born in Jamestown, the son of Mary Ann Dudgeon and Lawrence Lovejoy, who died last March. He attended grade and high school in Jamestown, and St. Lawrence University where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1948. A year later he received his master’s degree at the same college.

He was a member of honorary chemistry and journalism societies and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges. He was president of the Outing Club at St. Lawrence and chairman of the winter carnival. He also served on the school magazine and yearbook staff.

He completed his graduate work at the University of Buffalo and Fredonia State Teachers College. He taught mathematics and science at Attica High School and served two years at Lockport High School in a similar position. He came to Wilson Central from Lockport in 1952.

After serving a year as math and science teacher, Mr. Lovejoy was appointed secondary principal, a position he held until his death.

During 1943-1946, Mr. Lovejoy served as a bomber pilot in the U. S. Air Force. He was a second lieutenant at the time of his discharge.

He was a member of Wilson Exley Methodist Church here and was active in youth work as leader of the Church Youth Fellowship. He served as chairman of the Wilson Youth Commission and was secretary of the Wilson Lion’s Club at the time of his death.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Eleanor Jacobson Lovejoy; a daughter, Susan, a kindergarten student at Wilson, and a sister, Mrs. Logan Look, Jamestown.

Friends may call at the church prior to tonight’s prayer service.

Honorary pall bearers will be Richard Schmidle, L. Earnest Tarr, Archie Petty, Peter Sagasse, William Johnson, and Gordon Hausman.

Jamestown services will be conducted Friday by the Rev. Mr. Kingsley. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetary, Jamestown.
