WESLEY L. LAIRD, TEACHER, GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

Wesley L. Laird, 74, of Park Street died Sunday (March 2, 1997) in Olean General Hospital.

Born in Varysburg, he was a tool-and-die maker prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served in the European Theater.

After the war, he became a teacher, earning two master's degrees. He taught fifth grade, driver education and industrial shop for 19 years in the Wilson Central School District. He was employed 18 years as a guidance counselor at Pioneer Central School until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Arcade United Methodist Church and treasurer for many years. He also served for 20 years as treasurer for Arcade Boy Scout Troop 55. For four years, he reported data for the National Weather Service. He also prepared income taxes and volunteered his services to the American Association of Retired Persons. His first wife, Glenna M., died in 1994. Survivors include his second wife, Eleanora M. Parmerter Laird; three sons, Randall of Geneseo, Timothy of Batavia and John; two stepsons, George of Varysburg and Terry of Alexander; a brother, Frederick; a sister, Virginia Woodburn of St. Louis; seven grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Arcade United Methodist Church, 212 E. Main St. Burial will be in Johnsonburg Cemetery.
