LEWISTON -- Walter E. Roemer died Friday in Mount St. Mary's Hospital. He was 76.Born in Clifton Springs, he moved to Lewiston in 1965. He was a graduate of Attica High School and Brockport State College.

He was a naval veteran of the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. He served for 33 years in the Navy Reserve, was a graduate of the Naval Amphibious School in Virginia and was a qualified landing craft utility craftmaster, one of only a few in the Reserve. He retired in 1989 as a senior chief quartermaster.

Mr. Roemer was a science teacher at Lewiston-Porter Central School for 23 years, retiring in 1989. He also had been a state trooper from 1953 to 1954, when he took a leave of absence to complete his studies at Brockport and then returned to the troopers from 1956 to 1959. After beginning his teaching career, he worked summers as a state park policeman and later as a park aide at Niagara State Park and Four Mile Creek State campground.

He is survived by two sons, Michael and Patrick; four daughters, Elizabeth, Megan, Mary Kate and Bridget; and his former wife, Linda.A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Peter Catholic Church, 600 Center St.
